Owner, Emack & Bolio’s - Soho
In business for: Over 6 years.
In New York since: Born and bred New Yorker.
What are you most looking forward to this summer? Warm weather and lots of sunshine — and the introduction of my version of frozen hot chocolate.
Memorable Emack & Bolio’s moment: Making Best of AM New York. Sharing the excitement when celebrities drop in - like Uma Thurman, Chelsea Clinton, A-Rod and Cameron Diaz, Julianna Margulies, Tony Roberts, Kate Hudson, Laura Flanders, Jack Black, and many more.
Favorite NYC landmark: The art-deco Chrysler Building.
Your inspiration: I was looking for a way to combine the the elements of my background in chemistry (U of Pennsylvania), business (MBA NYU), and the culinary arts (Grand Diplôme from Soho’s French Culinary Institute, where I studied with Jacques Pepin).
Best part about living in NY: The pace, variety, and excitement — and everything is open late!
Why Emack & Bolio’s? As a professional chef, I wanted to sell only the best. For ice cream, that was unquestionably Emack & Bolio’s, already rated #1 by New Yorkers five years in a row by Zagat’s surveys. E&B was the first health-conscious, socially-conscious ice cream and predates Ben & Jerry’s. The flavor combinations of the ice cream, yogurts, and sorbets - as well as their name descriptions - are especially creative and tasty. That the ice cream and yogurts use bovine growth hormone-free milk is an added plus.
Best coffee in NY: Emack & Bolio’s - Soho!
Why Soho? Soho needed an ice cream store, and the funky E&B flavors complement the artistic milieu of the neighborhood.
Best bagels in NY: H&H Bagels.
How would you describe your customers? Because my store is located in Soho, my customers span the gamut, from local neighborhood residents to visitors from across the country and world. Many are loyal E&B customers who know us from our original home in Boston.
